For many people, applying deodorant is part of a morning routine. However, it appears we’ve all been getting our antiperspirant application wrong – we should be applying antiperspirant deodorant at night.
Internet-famous dermatologist Dr Sandra Lee (you might know her as Dr Pimple Popper) has shared a life hack in a Harper’s Bazaar video.
“Deodorant [antiperspirant] is best applied at night, it is most effective at night because you’re putting it on when your sweat glands are more dormant, so it’s going to make it [antiperspirant] more effective,” says Sandra.
Applying antiperspirant deodorant right after showering makes it harder for the active ingredients to get down into your sweat ducts and clog them. As sweat volume is typically higher in the morning than at night, morning applicants are more prone to being wiped or washed away.

Skin is typically drier and sweat glands less active at night, and as most active ingredients in antiperspirants last around 24 hours, the product should remain active in the morning, even after showering. In fact, most clinical-strength antiperspirants – which contain the highest amount of sweat-controlling active ingredients available over the counter – come with instructions to be applied before bed for maximum efficiency.
Dove dermatologist Dr. Ellen Marmur concurs, and in an interview with Byrdie said that “It’s best if you apply it after you’ve toweled off and your underarms have dried completely—the main point is that your skin is clean and dry.”
It might be time to rethink you’re application process.
