One of Australia’s most iconic lollies is being discontinued

End of an era.

In news that will shock everyone, Nestlé has decided to discontinue one of its most iconic (and delicious) lollies.

The announcement was made this week, with the company saying they will stop making Fantales next month.

Why are Fantales being discontinued?

In a nutshell, manufacturer Nestlé made the very tough decision to discontinue Fantales due to declining sales.

“We know our decision to stop making Fantales will be sad news for many people,” Nestlé Oceania Confectionery General Manager Andrew Lawrey said in a statement.

“Many of us grew up with Fantales and have fond memories of them.

“Despite the sense of nostalgia Fantales evoke, unfortunately people simply aren’t buying them as often as they used to.”

Andrew added the equipment needed to make Fantales was becoming too difficult to “maintain”.

“It’s become increasingly difficult to get the parts we need to maintain it, and with declining sales, replacing it isn’t viable.”

“We are deleting Fantales”

A statement on the Allen’s Lollies Facebook page said

“Today, we’re sharing the sad news that we are deleting Fantales.”

“We know Fantales is a product that many of us grew up with, whether they were enjoyed on trips to the movies or eaten on family trivia nights – however, this iconic Aussie lolly has been experiencing declining sales. Like you, we are sad to say goodbye.”

“We anticipate Fantales will be available until the end of July 2023, so make sure you stock up and take yourself down memory lane with our trivia questions.”

“Rest assured, we’re continuing to make our other delicious Allen’s lollies, including favourites such as Snakes Alive, Party Mix and Minties.

Thanks for the memories

As expected the news has left people on Facebook in complete shock, with commenters saying they have fond memories of eating Fantales as a kid.

“Noooooooooo. These hold very fond childhood memories,” said one commenter. “Nanna used to always have a stash in the pantry. She would quite often sneak us grandchildren one at bedtime. They were used as an incentive for a chores. That’s soooo sad for something so sweet. I’m gutted to see them go.

Another person said: “These are the most regularly purchased lollies by my family. Please don’t.”

“Today is a sad day. Fantales are an iconic Australian sweet, you can’t discontinue them!”

What is the origin of Fantales?

Fantales are chewy caramel candies covered in milk chocolate. They are known for having trivia questions and facts printed on the inside of their wrappers.

Fantales was first introduced in Australia in the 1920s by the Sweetacres confectionery company. They became quite popular over the years, especially in movie theatres, where they were often sold as a snack.

The wrapper of each Fantale candy traditionally features the name of a well-known celebrity or public figure, along with a trivia question or a fact about that person’s life. The questions and facts are usually related to the entertainment industry, and they provide an enjoyable way for people to learn interesting tidbits while enjoying the candy.
