The government cracks down.

Drones have caused many issues and spurred many discussions recently.  From flying into restricted airspace to captured neighbours while they’re unaware, drones can cause all manner of chaos should one decide to try.

With that in mind, drone owners will soon have to become accredited by the Australian Civil Aviation Safety Authority with a ‘flyer’s licence’ of sorts, should they wish to fly their drones. This rule is due to come into effect from July 2019.

Furthermore, drone owners will have to pay a registration fee from July 2019, similar to the fee paid by the owners of vehicle, should they wish to fly their aerodynamic contraptions.

ABC reports that the move will allow police to track down wrong-doers and better understand who owns what type of drone, and what areas those drones are in.

Drones that weigh more than 250g will have to pass an online education course and register their drone, according to a policy prepared by CASA. Registration fees will vary depending on the type of device you have and the purpose of it’s use. They fees could range from 420 to $160 annually.

So, if you have a child asking for a drone this Christmas – it might be wise to take into consideration the registration and licencing fees!
