Need a place to hang your clothes, but don’t want your wardrobe to take over your whole room?

Kmart’s new wardrobe system might be exactly what you’re after. It looks sleek, clips together in any configuration you like, and you can start small and add more units as you need them.

What is the Kmart wardrobe storage system?

The range consists of three pieces that work on their own or together. The standalone wardrobe system ($89) is the largest of the three, measuring 176cm wide and featuring built-in shelves, a hanging rail, and fabric drawers.

The hanging wardrobe storage system ($70) and the five-shelf wardrobe storage system ($50) are designed to clip together side by side, so you can build a configuration that suits your space and storage needs. Need more hanging room? Add another hanging unit. More of a folder than a hanger? Go heavy on the shelf units.

All three are made from particle board and metal, stand at 190cm or taller, and come with wall fixings.

Our verdict

Our senior editor, Sarah Murphy, has tried the hanging wardrobe storage system firsthand and can’t fault it. “I got just the hanging storage, and it’s really great,” she says. “It’s sturdier than you’d expect, and I reckon it looks pretty sleek too.”

Here’s what stood out to her most:

  • The hanging length is generous. Her coats hang without dragging on the base.
  • The top shelf is a bonus. It’s deep enough to hold storage tubs or extra blankets.
  • It hits the sweet spot between a clothes rack and a full wardrobe. Sarah wanted something more functional than a basic rack, but didn’t need or want to pay for a full wardrobe. This sits neatly in between, and feels sturdier than similar systems she’d seen elsewhere.

One practical heads up: the box is heavy and a little awkward to manoeuvre. So she’d recommend getting someone to help you transport it, especially if you have stairs at home.

What do the reviews say?

Shoppers have given this Kmart product a 5-star rating, with many admitting they didn’t expect it to be this good.

The size is the first thing that catches people off guard. “We ordered this with the expectation it would be smaller than we thought, but wow, she’s huge! And stable!” wrote one reviewer, who liked it so much they’re planning to buy a second one for their daughter.

Assembly gets consistently high marks, too. “Easy to install. Looks neat and tidy,” said one shopper, while another described it as going together “effortlessly.” One reviewer put it to the ultimate test, noting it “takes the weight of 45 shirts” without issue.

The value is what keeps coming up most. “This is one of the better wardrobe systems I’ve purchased from Kmart so far,” wrote one long-time Kmart shopper.

Is the Kmart wardrobe system worth it?

At $89 for a full wardrobe unit or $120 for the two modular systems clipped together, this range is hard to beat.

The fabric drawers on the standalone unit are the only part reviewers said they’d likely upgrade over time. But for $89, that’s a pretty minor gripe.
