If water leaking through your roof isn’t bad enough, there’s a good chance that it will leave a nasty stain once it dries.
Before we get into how to remove brown stain ceilings, an essential thing that needs to be done is to ensure the water leak that caused the stain has been fixed. There is no point in covering the water stain if the roof is going to get wet again.
How do I remove water stains off my ceiling?
A quick Google search reveals two methods to clean or cover or remove water stains from your ceiling: bleach or paint over it.
Repainting your whole ceiling might not sound like a lot of fun, but doing so will give you a better result. Just make sure your ceiling is clean before painting.
Carmen Jordan, British Paints’ Product Manager, says, “If your ceiling is nice and clean, there is no need to bleach the stain first.”

How to paint over water stains
If water has damaged and cracked the plaster, you’ll need to repair that before painting. Here’s a quick guide on how to repair cracks.
Next, you have to prep the wall for painting.
“The best way to paint over a water stain and avoid it showing through the layer of paint would be to use one coat of British Paints Prep 4in1™ Oil Based, says Carmen. “The PREP 4in1 Oil Based combines the functions of sealer, primer, undercoat and stain blocker in one convenient product.”
“With great hiding, filling, and adhesion properties, the PREP 4in1 is the ideal product for covering water-based stains, and it doesn’t require any sanding either.”
Although quick-drying, it’s recommended to leave this primer for at least 16 hours so it’s completely dry before painting over it.
Carmen says you will need to “add two coats of a top-coat paint, in your colour of choice.”
What about ceiling mould?
