The Judith | Kmart Waluwin homewares collection features traditional techniques and symbolic representation, including Waluwin, the Wiradjuri word for healing and good health.

“A lot of our mob positively connect and shop at Kmart around Australia, so to have the opportunity to work with them on this collection will have an impact on family across Victoria, Regional NSW, Sydney, Darwin and Adelaide,” says Judith about the collection.

“The deeper reason is that I felt that it was the right thing to do. From the first meeting, the atmosphere in the head office with the design team set the flow for the entire collection.”

The collection includes serving ware, candles, tea towels, decorative pots, a quilt set, canvas art print, and more. Creating the range was a collaborative effort, with Kmart’s in-house design team sitting down with Young and Kmart’s Indigenous Affairs Manager to explore several themes and topics within Young’s artwork.

“My work is about health, healing, joy, and peace”

Judith hopes the collection will promote a deeper connection to the land and inspire healthy living.

“From this collection, I want people to know my work is about health, healing, joy, and peace, speaking to the importance of healthy minds, bodies, and spirits. This comes from connecting with the country, eating well, and listening to your surroundings,” Judith said.

“The collection is about covering yourself in a healthy way of living, from what you eat, drink, wear, and sleep under. The leaves represented in the art are symbolic of the Waluwin way, and each leaf represents something different.

“Many Aboriginal people around this country will all have different varieties of plants and trees that they use to make themselves well, and that is part of the diverse story we have as Aboriginal people.

“We are all different, our artwork and stories are different, and each has deep significance, just as my markings have meaning to me and my family.”
