Give your home a makeover for free by shopping your own shelves. You’ll be surprised by what you can find in the garden or stashed away over the back of your cupboards.
1. Turn to nature
Turn up the colour in your house by bringing the outdoors in. If you don’t have flowers or grasses, try propagating succulents and breathe some life (and greenery) into empty spots and dark corners in your home.
2. Display a collection or treasured heirloom
Dig out those boxes of collections and mementoes and keep an eye out for shapes, patterns and colours that work well together.
Create an eye-catching gallery wall with a collection of plates or baskets.
3. Use up leftover paint
Scour the garage or shed for a leftover can of paint and put it to good use. Use it to paint an accent wall behind the bed or your head, or the end of a hallway.
4. Use a scarf or a wrap
Use a spare piece of print fabric – or even a scarf or wrap – to change the look of furniture. Pop out the seat of an old chair and cover it with a vintage scarf, or tie a piece of fabric around a throw cushion.
5. Go for open shelving
Hate the look of your kitchen cabinets? All you need to do is unscrew them and remove the doors to reveal open shelves. Organise your plates and glassware into stacks and display your cookbooks or prettiest pieces.
