It’s estimated that we spend around a third of our lives sleeping, which is a significant amount of time spent in the bedroom. That’s why it’s so important to choose items that will not only ensure some quality shut eye, but will also create an inviting space. From a top-notch mattress to specialised lighting – when it comes to both aesthetic and function, here are five of the most important investments for your bedroom.
1. Blinds
From light control, to privacy, to style – the window treatment you decide on can have a dramatic impact on the look and function of your bedroom. Most importantly? Poor light control can have a significant effect on your quality of sleep and your overall health, as darkness is essential for production of the sleep hormone melatonin. Consider choosing a blackout option so you can snooze soundly (sans sunlight).
2. Mattresses
When it comes to investing in your bedroom (and a better night’s sleep), there’s nothing more critical than choosing the right mattress. Look for a mattress that works well across the changing Australian seasons such as the Orthokinetic Signature Monarch mattress from Amart Furniture’s signature range, which has a removable seasonable topper for year-round comfort. Featuring bamboo-infused latex and viscose elastic, the mattress materials also help regulate your body temperature, which studies have found can improve the quality of your shut eye. Plus, comfort is key. Its high-density foam edge cocoons the seven-zone, micro pocket, coil support core (which is exclusive to Amart Furniture), so you can sleep anywhere on your mattress without feeling any sagging or movement.
3. Rugs
From a warming touch on cold winter mornings to a noise buffer on wooden floors – rugs are often a bedroom essential. Choose a contrasting colour palette or pattern that isn’t too loud or stimulating for a bedroom. Mixing and matching styles will prevent your room from feeling too formal or stuffy.
“Your rug should frame the bed, extending past the foot of the bed while the bedhead and bedside tables can sit completely on the rug,” comments Dora Papas, BHG Deputy Editor. “If you have a large bedroom and would prefer to showcase more of the rug, you can pull it out a bit from the wall so the front legs of the bedside tables rest on the rug. Alternatively, the rug can start after the bedside table. Smaller rectangular rugs can be placed on each side of the bed.”
4. Storage
If Marie Kondo’s famous “KonMari” method could be applied to just one room in your house it would be the bedroom. Clear your sleep space of clutter and mess by investing in a set of timeless storage solutions. Tip: to achieve a calming symmetrical look in your bedroom, flank the bed with identical furniture pieces and accessories. Look for a matching bed frame, side tables and tallboy (for all of your extra storage needs). This will help frame the room nicely and add a touch of cohesion so you can let the accessories shine.
5. Lighting
Lastly, living rooms and bedrooms are all about mood and atmosphere so this should be top of mind for illuminating these spaces. Pendant lights and lamps are great choices for bedrooms because they add a sculptural element as well soft lighting – it’s a win-win. Experts recommend dimming lights at least one hour before bed to help ease the production of serotonin in the brain, which will help you fall asleep faster.
