Not all of us are green thumbs, but that doesn’t mean we can’t learn from their best-kept secrets.
Here, we unveil five of them.
1. They choose the right plants
Monstera plants are trending right now, but they won’t necessarily work for you at home. Take stock of the best spots for plants in your home, and note each lighting situation. Choose your plants based on your individual needs, not on the plant-of-the-moment.
2. They have a favourite nursery
Green thumbs tend to have a go-to nursery that they rely on for new plants, information and advice. If you don’t know where to start, ask one of your green thumb friends for recommendations. If you find a nursery that has a good line-up of plants, keep going back to them and build a relationship. Chances are, they will continue to source the plants that you love. Don’t be afraid to ask questions and mine the experts for advice on how to care for your plants. Good places to start are Garden Life in Sydney and Ivy Muse in Melbourne.
3. They save the tag
Don’t discard the little tag that comes with your plant. Read the information and refer back to it to ensure you’re watering and feeding your plant appropriately.
4. They’re not afraid to use fake plants
Shhh. You can use fake plants strategically in your home. Many green thumbs use fake plants in spaces where there isn’t enough light, or to add texture to a group of real plants. Just be careful not to go overboard, and go for good quality fakies.
5. They make mistakes
Green thumbs always have some plants that just don’t work, so don’t be discouraged by any failures. Learn from your mistakes and keep going on your plant-growing journey. Good luck!
