Chilli sauce lovers have found themselves in a bit of pinch when it comes to their favourite hot sauce: Huy Fong Foods Sriracha.
The company announced they have suspended their production of spicy sauces – Sriracha, Chilli Garlic and Sambal Oelek – due to a lack of chilli peppers.
“Unfortunately, we can confirm that there is an unprecedented shortage of our products,” the company said in a statement.
“We are still endeavoring to resolve this issue that has been caused by several spiraling events, including unexpected crop failure from the spring chilli harvest. We hope for a fruitful fall season and thank our customers for their patience and continued support during this difficult time.”
Sriracha substitutes
While some lucky people are still managing to get their hands on the last few bottles of sriracha, Huy Fong Foods says they won’t be taking any more orders for the popular sauce until at least September.
If you are looking for a sriracha alternative, Better Homes and Gardens Food Editor Sarah Murphy says for a similar flavour profile, the Indonesian style Sambal Oelek is your best bet.
“You’ll find this in small jars (not in a bottle like sriracha),” she says. “It does tend to be a little thicker than Sriracha, so you may need to stir a little water into it to get the sauce to the consistency you need for your dish.”
Alternatively, sriracha is made of red jalapeño peppers, salt, sugar, garlic, and white vinegar, so looking for a hot sauce that contains the same ingredients is also a great place to start.
