The best way to cook pearl barley

You will need:

  • 1 cup pearl barley
  • 2 cups water
  • Salt

Instructions:

  1. Measure out one cup of pearl barley using a measuring cup and pour into a large bowl. Rinse under cold running water once and drain.
  2. In a pot, add the barley and three cups of water. Add a pinch of salt for flavour if your heart desires.
  3. Bring the barley and water to a boil, then reduce the heat to low and let it simmer with the lid on.
  4. Let it cook for 30-40 minutes. The cooking time may vary depending on the brand. Check the barley occasionally and add more water if required.
  5. Once the barley has plumped up and tripled in volume, it’s ready. Take it off the heat and let it sit for 5-10 minutes to absorb any remaining liquid.
  6. Using a fork, fluff the barley and add to your favourite salads, stews and soups.
