We answer an age-old question.

Here is our handy guide to how long different types of wine last once open, and how to tell if the wine has gone bad.

Sparkling

A high-quality sparkling wine can usually last 1 to 3 days after opening, as long as it has been tightly sealed and kept in the fridge, but once the fizz is gone – so is the bottle.

Red wine

A big, robust red can last 3 to 5 days once opened if kept in a cool dark place or the fridge. Those with a higher level of acidity or tannins are likely to last the longest.

White wine and rose

An open bottle of white wine or rose can last up to 5 days after opening as long as it has been tightly sealed and kept in the fridge.

Fortified wine

Unlike other wines, fortified wines can last up to 28 days after opening as long as they are sealed straight after opening and kept in a cool, dark place

Boxed wine

Delightfully cost effective, these little doozies can last up to 28 days in the fridge once opened, as the majority of the win isn’t exposed to air when you pour yourself a glass.
