If you think that spices last forever, think again.
According to food experts, spices don’t go off, but they have less potency and don’t taste as good over time.
Here are the expiration dates for herbs and spices. Check out what you’ve got in your pantry.
Ground spices:
Last for up to one year
Dried leaves and flowers
Last for up to one year
Whole spices
Last for one to two years
Whole seeds and roots
Last from two to three years
Here are some other ways to get the most out of your spices:
- Give them a sniff. If they’ve lost their aroma, chances are they’ve lost their flavor as well.
- Only buy in small quantities so you use them by the expiration date.
- Grind your own whole spices in a coffee maker. It’s cheaper and you’re guaranteed freshness.
- Keep your spices in a dry, dark place. Don’t store spices near the stove or in the fridge.
- Store your spices in airtight containers.
