Whole seeds and roots

Here are some other ways to get the most out of your spices:

  • Give them a sniff. If they’ve lost their aroma, chances are they’ve lost their flavor as well.
  • Only buy in small quantities so you use them by the expiration date.
  • Grind your own whole spices in a coffee maker. It’s cheaper and you’re guaranteed freshness.
  • Keep your spices in a dry, dark place. Don’t store spices near the stove or in the fridge.
  • Store your spices in airtight containers.
