As if you needed another reason to indulge your sweet tooth, University of L’Aquila in Italy has just released the results of a recent review into the effects of chocolate and cocoa on human cognition, and it proves that chocolate is good for us.
Published in Science Daily, the review found that eating cacao-based snacks can help protect the brain from cognitive decline and can also improve focus, processing speed, and working memory.
After reviewing multiple past studies into the effects of chocolate, the Italian researchers discovered that regular consumption of cocoa and chocolate can have beneficial effects on cognitive function over time, that is, improve your memory and brain function.
Seniors at risk of memory decline benefitted the most from regularly eating chocolate, while young adults who snacked on chocolate experienced short term benefits such as improved performance on cognitive tests.
It turns out that chocolate is good for your brain due to the cocoa flavanols, which can aid in happy and healthy cardiovascular systems and boost blood flow to the part of the brain that is particularly susceptible to ageing.
However, you’ll get the most benefits from dark chocolate.
