Humans have used salt for thousands of years to preserve and season food (and some would argue we have embraced salt in our diet a little too enthusiastically). But did you know salt is also a valuable element in modern manufacturing and medicine? In fact, it’s an ibuprofen salt that allows Nurofen Zavance tablets and caplets to be absorbed faster for the relief of pain. Here are five other fascinating facts on (not so) plain old salt:
1. WHAT DOES ‘WORTH YOUR SALT’ MEAN?
According to David Bloch’s Salt and The Evolution of Money, the word “salary” comes from the Latin word for salt because the Roman Legions were sometimes paid in salt. They say the soldiers who did their job well were “worth their salt”.
2. WHAT IS IODISED SALT?
Most table salt has added iodine, an essential nutrient that helps to maintain a healthy thyroid. According to the Wall Street Journal’s recent article on Salts Worth Their Salt, sea salt and table salt have the same basic nutritional value, despite the fact that sea salt is often promoted as being healthier.
3. SALT OR SODIUM?
Sodium is a component of table salt, which is only partly sodium. Nurofen Zavance tablets and caplets have a unique formulation containing a sodium salt, which allows for two times faster absorption than standard Nurofen for fast relief when you need it.
4. THE STAIN SAVER
If your carpet has suffered from a wine spill, act fast. A good blotting with soda water is a great start, and salt will finish the job by removing any leftover residue. According to Trusted Cleaner, to help get the rest out try covering the stained spot with a generous portion of table salt, which will draw the moisture in the stain out of the carpet over the next few hours.
5. SALT FOR SIGHT
According to Popular Science, salt is a key ingredient when it comes to making high-quality optical lenses, with salt cake (an impure form of sodium sulfate) being a common material found in the production of strong glass.
