Actor Ada Nicodemou may not see her best mate as much as she’d like, but she knows she can count on her when she needs her – whether it’s for a debrief at the end of a tough day, or to reminisce and mutually cringe about fashion disasters from their past.
“I do make time for my friends, and even though my best friend lives overseas, we are in touch all the time,” Ada tells Better Homes and Gardens. “We are always there for each other, and I know she’s got my back.”
Changing lifestyles and family commitments can mean an adjustment to a friendship dynamic, but there are some friendship qualities that are tried and true.
“As I’ve gotten older, I’ve become more appreciative of my friendships,” Ada says. “I may be more cautious to make new ones, but the friends I have mean the world to me.”
Let’s honour the beauty of female friendships. Here’s five signs you know you have an amazing pal.
1. You laugh harder with her than with anyone else
Friendships should be warm and fun. A great friend gets you and you get her too. There’s a natural chemistry and you just click. So much so that you often know what each other is thinking, and even the smallest things can make you both laugh. When you’re together your cup is always full.
2. She’s your biggest champion
Best friends boost you up. They support you and they encourage you to grow and reach your potential. She’s your biggest cheerleader and whether you’re going for a promotion at work or trying your hand at a new hobby, she’s the only hype squad you need.
3. She makes you feel seen, understood and validated
It doesn’t matter how much time passes; a true friend knows exactly what you need. When you pick up the phone she’ll listen without judgement, she’ll empathise and back you all the way. It’s unconditional and she makes you feel validated and seen.
4. She’s honest with you
While you want a friend who is supportive, you also want her to be honest and realistic in her advice to you. Telling you something you may not want to hear takes courage and shows that your friend really does care. A true friend will tell you the hard truths, such as patterns with your relationships, or what does (or doesn’t) look great on you.
5. You can count on her in good times and bad
She’s there to celebrate your wins together and share in your pain. You know she’s a best friend when she feels your joy, but also hurts when you’re hurting too. Having a good friend who’s there when you’re at your lowest is essential.
Friends bring emotional support, empathy, valuable perspectives, celebration of achievements, and joy to our lives. Cherish and celebrate your best pals; they are truly amazing.
