The smart beds that can optimise your sleep and comfort levels automatically

Tech designed to make it easy for to get the best night's sleep.
The Eight Sleep Pod 4 Ultra smart bed system.

Gone are the days when a basic bed frame and hand-me-down mattress was the norm. Now, we have mattresses that come in boxes and can be customised based on how soft or firm you want them, adjustable bed frames and, yes, even smart beds.

The latter are basically an evolution of other adjustable bedding, using technology to help you sleep better, and sometimes having handy extras like built-in lighting, charging stations and massage functions. In fact, some smart bed systems even offer sensors to track and analyse your sleep patterns over time, for more targeted adjustments to your comfort.

But the next-level comfort potential of smart beds doesn’t come cheap, with most of the options currently on the market costing upwards of $3000. So it makes sense to check out a few different smart beds before deciding what’s right for you. To help you make the choice, we’ve researched a range of products on the market to come up with a list of some of the best options based on their features, different modes or settings and whether they can be used with an existing bed base or mattress. When relevant, we’ve also considered reviews from people who’ve bought or tested them out.

Eight Sleep Pod 4 Ultra

from $6449 (usually $6599), Eight Sleep

Best for: total sleep optimisation

The Eight Sleep Pod 4 Ultra is a base, smart mattress cover (the Pod) and a Hub that manages features of this system, such as the temperature and app connectivity. With this set up, you can adjust the elevation of the head and foot of your mattress, set an ideal temperature between 12-43°C and customise it for different sides of the bed (great if your bedfellow runs hotter or colder than you).

Then there’s the Autopilot app, which tracks your sleep patterns and provides data on the length and quality of your sleep, has vibration and thermal alarms to help wake you up without loud noises, and plenty of automated adjustments like changing the elevation when snoring is detected. The app is an additional cost of $299 or $499 per year, and you need to subscribe for at least 12 months with this system, so make sure you factor that into the total price.

“The technology is unlike any sleep device or wearables I’ve ever tested, and comparably the best on the market based on technology, engineering and comfort,” Better Homes & Gardens shopping contributor Tara Lusk said in her review of the Eight Sleep Pod 4 (without the base). But she also noted the high cost could mean it’s “out of the question for many people.”

Sealy Posturematic Energise Adjustable Base

from $1899.50 (usually from $3799), Myer

Best for: complete rest

This smart bed base makes it easy to adjust your bed for sleeping, reading, entertaining, improved circulation and recovery – all from a remote control. It has adjustable settings for both the head and foot of the bed, including a “zero gravity” setting that elevates the legs higher than the chest in a position similar to the neutral positions astronauts may take. Data on these zero-g positions has influenced design for decades, according to NASA, but it has mostly been focused on chair designs. So with this bed, you can try it and adjust your position in an instant (if you want to), thanks to the handy Auto Flat setting.

It also has a variable massage setting, USB charging and under bed LED light and torch so you can navigate your bedroom in the dark without turning on a lamp or overhead light. It’s also suited to Sealy Posturepedic mattresses with FlexiCased edge support, such as the Elevate Botanica Flex and Elevate Ultra Acacia Flex.

“This has been one of the best purchases made,” one customer shared in a five star review on Myer, where it has an average rating of 4.8 stars from over 11 reviews. “The zero gravity is amazing and the massage function is a great addition.”

Best for: upgrading your existing bed with smart tech

The Eight Sleep Pod 4 gives you a way to track your sleep and other health data, and optimise it, without a major overhaul of your existing bed. This smart mattress cover plugs into the Eight Sleep Hub, which works with the app to help you track and get a better night’s sleep. It also has alarm features, with vibration and temperature increases to help you wake up on time.

In her review for Better Homes & Gardens, Tara Lusk said it was “nothing short of a game-changer in transforming my sleep quality over the past few weeks.”

“The Pod 4 has not only made me more conscious of the factors that contribute to high-quality rest but has also helped me achieve consistently impressive sleep fitness scores.”

Like the Pod 4 Ultra, you do need to get a 12 month subscription of the Autopilot app. But if your budget is a bit tighter, you could consider the previous generation’s Pod 3 Cover and Hub, currently available from $3545 (or $3884 with the subscription added in).

Is a smart bed worth it?

If you want to optimise your sleep with electronic adjustable elements, temperature controls, massage functions or sleep and health tracking tools, a smart bed could be worth it. A smart bed could also be helpful for at-home care of a loved one.

But if you already have a fitness tracker or other tools that help optimise aspects of your sleep, or guidance from a health professional, then you might want to consider other types of beds before making a decision.

Then, when you’re shopping, it can help to keep these details in mind:

  • Whether you need to replace your mattress and bed base, or just one part of it
  • How often you’re likely to use smart bed features
  • What features you definitely want (and any you don’t)
  • How much you’re willing to pay for a new bed
  • The warranty details, including repair options if something needs to be fixed
  • Any additional costs, such as subscriptions, delivery or assembly fees

At the moment, there are only a few smart bed systems on the market in Australia. But with a growing number of people choosing smart homes and tech for convenience, security and comfort, we’re watching this space to see how the trend grows.
