Laundry piles up in the corner, laptops and books stack up bedside, and even a makeshift bathroom vanity pops up on the dresser. The bedroom is often where we feel most comfortable and is ground zero for the day ahead. To stop it looking like a bomb has gone off, it’s time to get creative.

Here are some super simple ways that help you store more in your small bedroom.

1. Under bed storage

If you have space underneath your bed, make sure to use it! Depending on the size of the space, this area is such a neat and tidy way to store things like linen, shoes, or even your off-season wardrobe.

There are plenty of bed frames available that have built-in drawers. Always make sure drawers are not obstructed by things like bedside tables – if it’s not easy to open you won’t use them. A decorative solution is to use woven baskets to add a bohemian trim to your bed frame. Alternatively, flat plastic tubs on wheels make a practical and durable storage solution.

2. Up the wall

When space is an issue, it helps to think outside the box… and up the walls! There are so many vertical storage solutions that make the most of your wall space while displaying your pretty bits and pieces. Jackets and throws can be arranged on a wooden ladder, your hat collection can make unique wall art with jumbo hooks and a pegboard shelf can take your accessories off the floor and onto the wall for easy access.

3. Behind the Door

There are tonnes of nooks and crannies around the house that are continually being underutilised and the space behind (most) doors is the main culprit. Depending on how wide the space is, there are multiple ways that you can turn this dead space into a storage haven. If space permits, recessed or floating shelving adds a tremendous hidden design element to store your knick-knacks. If the area is a little more on the lean side, try attaching multiple towel racks to the adjoining wall for a sneaky way to hang things like wet towels and dirty clothes.

4. Closet hacks

To keep your bedroom floor free of wardrobe items, invest some time into thinking creatively about your closet space and needs. Everyone has different needs when it comes to closet storage. You might have hundreds of shoes that require a place to live, or your coat collection is out of control! Whatever your vice is, decide on closet storage solutions that make things simpler to put away. If you don’t have a wardrobe, why not consider building one? That way you can cater to your storage needs from the get go.

For those with a cramped wardrobe, create extra hanging space by using ‘S’ hooks to double up on your coat hangers. Shower curtain rings make handy closet companions for scarves and belts. Don’t forget the top shelf by using fabric boxes to keep your lesser used items safe and out of sight.
