Study finds plants and flowers can reduce pain levels

Flowers are the perfect gift for almost any occasion. By simply choosing an appropriate colour, flowers can be gifted for birthdays, anniversaries, weddings, births, deaths and get-well-soon gifts. But did you know flowers actually have the power to reduce pain?

According to new research completed by the American Society for Horticulture Science, surgical patients exposed to flowers or plants in their recovery rooms have lower blood pressure, lower heart rates, lower ratings of pain, anxiety and fatigue than patients whose rooms have no foliage, flowers or plants.  In fact, patients who had plants in their room even reported more positive feelings and satisfaction about their rooms than those without plants.

The study split 90 surgical patients into rooms that either had plants, or did not have plants, to evaluate the therapeutic influences.  The research suggests that flowers should be used as complementary medicine for recovering patients.

So, should you be recovering from a painful surgery, injury or other ailment, filling your home with indoor plants and flowers may just be the little extra kick you need to overcome the discomfort!
