As a Shopping Editor, I’ve written about a lot of different household appliances, but there’s no product I’m more familiar with than robot vacuums.

Since testing out the Dreame Aqua10 Ultra Roller robot vacuum (amongst other models), I’ve come to see them as a household staple. But, if I’m being completely honest, most robot vacuums just don’t deliver a thorough clean, and given that the Spot + Scrub AI is only Dyson’s second robot vacuum model, I was fairly sceptical when it arrived on my doorstep.

Jump to:

Over the past few weeks, I’ve put the Spot + Scrub AI through the wringer, subjecting it to spills, pet hair, dust, grime, and any other kind of mess you could possibly imagine.

The result? This sleek little machine, which I now thoroughly regret doubting, has proven itself as a worthy contender in the saturated robot vacuum market and earned a permanent spot in my own home.

Rating: 8/10

If you’re after a long, in-depth review of the Dyson Spot + Scrub AI Robot Vacuum, don’t worry; I’ll go into excruciating detail shortly, but, in a nutshell, I absolutely adore this machine.

Most robot vacuums are at least a little bit deceptive, and by that, I mean that they’re not quite as hands-free as they’d have you believe. With other models, I’ve found myself picking up clumps of pet hair they couldn’t quite suck up, jumping on the app to schedule a second round, or going over edges the machines couldn’t quite reach. With the Dyson Scrub + Spot AI, this couldn’t be further from my experience.

Each clean is thorough and efficient. The dock holds a generous amount of debris, minimising the time I spend on robot vacuum maintenance, and the bagless design makes emptying mess-free. This robot vacuum really is the ultimate time-saver and, while it won’t completely replace your regular vacuum cleaner, it will significantly reduce the amount of time you spend cleaning your floors.

Spot + Scrub AI pros and cons

Pros

  • The anti-tangle brush makes this a great robot vacuum for removing pet hair
  • Carpet boost mode seems stronger than that of most other models
  • AI-powered mess-detection and automatic suction power adjustment decrease the need for additional cleans
  • No-go zones and regular scheduled cleaning times make floor maintenance seamless
  • Self-cleaning wet roller: no need to touch wet mop pads
  • The price point is considerably lower than that of other similar high-quality models

Cons

  • Despite being well-priced for a premium robot vacuum, the $1,999 price tag is still pretty steep
  • It won’t replace your vacuum entirely (but, in my experience, no robot vacuum will)
  • Wi-fi connectivity was a little unpredictable during setup
  • Mapping was time-consuming to set up

Dyson Spot + Scrub AI Robot Vacuum

from $1,794 (was $1,999), Dyson

Armed with a high-contrast green light to reveal dirt, stains, and dust that the human eye can’t detect, this smart little robot vacuum/mop hybrid is even less likely to miss a spot than you are. Add in the model’s HD camera and AI intelligence, and you’ve got a completely self-sufficient cleaning assistant that can automatically adjust suction power, clean its own roller, and identify nearly 200 objects for easy navigation.

And if you’re under the impression that you’ll be on regular bag-emptying duty, think again. The Spot + Scrub AI comes with a clever cyclonic dock that separates and ejects waste (no bags required) and stores any dry debris that your vacuum picks up for up to 100 days.

Shipping, returns, and warranty:

Dyson offers free shipping, a generous two-year warranty, and a 45-day trial period, during which you’re able to return your Spot + Scrub AI Robot Vacuum if you’re not completely satisfied. However, I’m very confident you won’t need (or want) to return this model anytime soon.

My honest review of the Dyson Spot + Scrub AI

If you’re after a cheap model for light cleaning between vacuums, this isn’t the model for you. However, if you want to invest in a premium robot vacuum that will substantially reduce the amount of time you spend vacuuming and mopping, I couldn’t recommend the Dyson Spot + Scrub AI robot vacuum enough.

The setup process

I’ll be the first to admit that I’m not the best with instructions, but the setup was reasonably simple. There weren’t many parts in the box, so putting the machine together (A.K.A. clipping the two sweeping brushes underneath the robot and popping the robot on the dock) wasn’t an issue. The app, however, did confuse me a little.

What to expect from the Dyson in-app experience

It took a few tries to connect to Wi-Fi, which is necessary for controlling the robot vacuum through the app. Once it finally connected, I moved on to mapping. The robot completed the scan of my upstairs area remarkably quickly; it did take a while for the map to show up on the app, but once it did, I was away.

Cleaning performance

When I read that this model adjusted suction power automatically, I was sceptical; it’s something a lot of models promise, but don’t deliver on. The Dyson Scrub + Spot AI, however, really did deliver.

I tossed coffee grounds and other bits of debris in the Spot + Scrub’s path as it was cleaning, and, lo and behold, I could hear a big change as it adjusted settings to best suck them up. There were no coffee grounds left behind, no edge left unswept, no floorboard left unmopped. This thing is powerful and wickedly smart; I could tell from the first clean it was one of those ‘no going back’ kind of purchases.

My final verdict on the Dyson Spot + Scrub AI

The real standout feature has to be the cleaning power. Forget those lacklustre suction capabilities of other robot vacs; the Spot & Scrub uses the latest tech to deliver a life-changing level of cleaning (and no, I’m not being dramatic, this thing has saved me hours of manual vacuuming). I’m talking about extracting embedded dirt, capturing ultra-fine dust, and scrubbing away grimy spots that would normally require a whole lot of elbow grease.

In the past, I’ve had a lot of trouble finding a robot vacuum that does a decent job cleaning my rugs. I usually blame my dog’s constant shedding, but if I’m being honest, it’s my own long hair that trips up most models; I can’t even count the number of times I’ve come home to hairballs after testing out alternative robot vacuums. The Spot + Scrub, on the other hand, makes it look easy.

You don’t have to constantly monitor it or intervene during cleaning cycles, either. The onboard AI can identify problem areas and adjust its cleaning pattern accordingly, ensuring every inch of your floors is left looking and feeling brand new. It even empties itself when the bin is full, so you can just let it do its thing while you get on with your day. I chose to set up regular cleaning times, so I don’t even have to think about turning it on; it just gets on with it while I’m at work, and now, I get to come home to perfectly polished floors and fluffy carpets every day.

Overall, is it worth it?

In short, yes, the Dyson Spot + Scrub AI Robot vacuum is absolutely worth the investment.

As someone who has tried and tested more robot vacuums than the average person, I believe this particular model is in a league of its own. Not only is it equipped with the latest technical features, but it’s priced remarkably well for a model that I consider to be on the premium end of the robot vacuum spectrum. This may sound like a reach, given that the Dyson Spot + Scrub AI is priced at just under $2000, but compared to other high-end options that often surpass $3000, it’s actually pretty reasonable.
