3 myths holding you back from making quality espresso at home

And how Breville can help you unleash your inner barista.

Merely existing costs a fortune these days, so one of the first extravagances that had to go during a recent household budget review was my takeaway coffee habit. But what replaced the barista-made cappuccino I once enjoyed daily (okay, sometimes it was twice daily)? Instant. Talk about going from one extreme to the other.

If you’re a budget-conscious coffee addict, it makes sense to invest in a home espresso machine. But for me, the initial expense, plus a complete lack of coffee-making skills, made me hesitate. Breville’s global general manager of coffee, Con Psarologos, says I’m not alone.

“To enjoy coffee at home like from your favourite cafe, you need the right machine, beans and skills,” he says. To solve the problem, Breville have launched the Fast Track Barista Pack. It’s their way of addressing the skills gap that can prevent people like me from taking the leap from expensive takeaway coffee to making your own (actually amazing) home espresso.

Myth 1: Home coffee machines are too expensive

Investing in a good-quality home coffee machine may seem like an unnecessary expense. But if you do the maths, you might find it’ll actually save you money in the long run. At the moment, the average price of a takeaway coffee in Sydney is anywhere from $4.50-$5. If I was to buy two coffees a day at $4.50 for an entire year, I’d be spending $3,285.

Bench space is limited in my house, so Breville’s the Bambino Plus is great for me (because it will automatically froth the milk to perfection). It’s $549 to buy. If I subtract $549 from $3285, I still have $2736 to spare, which is a lot of money to spend on good quality beans. I’m opting to go sans grinder and simply buy pre-ground coffee beans (to save time and bench space).

Myth 2: I’m not a barista

We all love our local barista – their ability to pour consistently good cups of coffee is astounding. How could I possibly measure up? Not to mention gaining all the skills involved in nailing the four elements of good espresso: dosage, pressure, temperature and steam.

Turns out Breville have come up with the solution for this too. “We don’t just make coffee machines, we make home baristas,” says Con. When you take part in the Fast Track Barista Pack, you’ll get machine-specific step-by-step video tutorials that will take you from zero to hero.

Myth 3: I don’t know which beans to buy

Website data aggregator SmartScraper says there are 914 coffee roasters in Australia! That’s a lot of beans to choose from. While I could select beans based solely on whether the packaging looks nice, there is a better way. Head over to Beanz.com by Breville and complete the quiz. By answering six simple questions, you’ll discover exactly which beans are right for your tastebuds, without having to disappear down a research rabbit hole.

The Fast Track Barista Pack makes home espresso as easy as one, two, three.

1. Purchase a Breville coffee machine and register it online within 30 days. You’ll then receive two free bags of coffee beans – winning!

2. Next you’ll need a steady supply of the best quality beans. Order on beanz.com and you’ll earn $50 cashback for every $200 spent.
