Skincare products that fix and prevent breakouts

For brighter, smoother and clearer skin.

It doesn’t seem to matter whether you’re an adult or a teenager. Pimples, breakouts, bumpy and uneven skin can be a problem that plagues adults well into their thirties, not to mention those who develop adult acne after being free and clear in their teenage years. However, there are some tweaks you can make o your skincare regime that can reduce and prevent breakouts.

The basics:

It’s important to wash your face morning and night to remove product build-up, make-up and debris collected from your day out and about in the city. Not only will this help to keep your skin clear, but environmental pollution can cause premature ageing almost as harmful as sun damage.

Be sure to always moisturise your skin, and avoid using too many products at once. If you’re a make-up junkie, be sure to thoroughly wash all makeup brushes and sponges after use as they can be a breeding ground for bacteria.

Check your current skincare regime:

Layering multiple products on your face (such as cleanser, toner, serums, moisturisers and oils) can be an excellent way to target skin concerns. However, you need to be careful that you aren’t mixing reaction ingredients. For example, using both products that contain niacinamide and vitamin c on your skin at the same time can cause redness and trigger acne breakouts.

Use acne-fighting products:

  • Using products that contain glycolic acid, such as a toner or face mask, can reduce breakouts and decrease the appearance of scars left behind by acne. Glycolic acid stimulates the skin’s natural exfoliating process and boosts moisture.
  • Treat dehydration and congested skin by using a serum or moisturizer that contains Niacinamide, which can hydrate your skin while normalizing oil production and reducing the appearance of blemishes. Never mix with products that contain vitamin C.
  • Use an antioxidant, such as hydrating and plumping hyaluronic acid, to protect your skin against environmental pollution and free radicals which cause premature ageing.
  • Use products that contain salicylic acid, which is another exfoliating and skin-friendly acid that can dissolve dirt and debris in your pores, act as an anti-inflammatory and helps pimples disappear faster.

Check your diet:

Acne and breakouts can be triggered by foods such as dairy, white rice and pasta, bread, cakes and biscuits. Dark, leafy greens, blueberries and broccoli can fight inflammation in your skin, and ensure you are drinking plenty of water.

Be cautious:

Always test new products on a small patch of skin before slathering it on your face, and always introduce acids to your skincare regime slowly. Speak to a professional for guidance.
