A Perth woman has ucreated ed a stunning upholstered bedhead hack with a Kmart $14 blanket.
Hayley Bishop is no stranger to upcycling and DIY projects.
“My hubby and I like to make our own pieces – we get free items from Gumtree or verge side collection and upcycle them and make items for our home,” she told Better Homes and Gardens.
An upholstered bed head has been on Ms Bishop’s wishlist, but she couldn’t afford to buy one.
“I have wanted a tufted headboard for a while now but I could not find one that we could afford – not even a second-hand one – so I thought I’d just make it. I have upcycled one before but thought I would build this one from scratch,” she said.
Ms Bishop used materials that she had picked up on Gumtree for free. The only item she purchased was a $14 single soft touch blanket from Kmart. A similar upholstered headboard would cost upwards of $350.
The project took around four hours to complete.
“For me, it’s about being able to have nice things without the high price tag (preferably without any price tag). So when I see things I love but can’t afford we just make them. It just takes time,” she said.
The clever hack was praised on social media, accruing more than 3.5K likes on Facebook group Kmart Mums Australia.
“That looks sensational,” wrote one woman.
“You are one talented woman, well done!” added another.
How to make a headboard
Step 1
Cut the partical board to size.
Step 2
Cover with cushion inserts.
Step 3
Cover the cushion inserts with foam.
Step 4
Take an old yoga mat and cut strips to place around the edges of the foam. Staple it to the board as a safeguard to stop the foam from ripping out and coming loose.
Step 5
Cover with the blanket and staple it to the board.
Step 6
Use the excess fabric from the blanket to cover the buttons. Ms Bishop used a pin and a small elastic band.
Step 7
Using a piece of string to guide you, measure where you want the buttons to go.
Step 8
Nail wide-headed nails to the marked areas, then attach the buttons to the nail heads with a hot glue gun.
Step 9
Cut some pieces of wood to size and screw them on to the bedhead to create legs.
