Over 800 boys’ names and girls’ names

Before you completely write this off, keep in mind that Ikea is known for giving delightful names to all of its products, and a quick scan of their ‘name bank’ will surprise you!

“Finding the name of the child can be both difficult and fun,” writes Ikea Norway on its website. “We at Ikea have given names to products for more than 70 years. So, if you are completely stuck, or just want some inspiration, here you will find over 800 boys’ names and girls’ names.”

Many of the names come with a picture of the furniture they were named after, a little bit about the name, and the year they were sold in Ikea. The best part is that some of the names date back decades, so you might stumble across a gem that hasn’t been heard in a while. For example:

  • Agnes – Everything goes much easier when Agnes is in the room (1957)
  • Bo – Thrives best in the kitchen (1955)
  • Nanette – Letting people in (2001)
  • Pax – Comes in all possible sizes and shapes (2018).

IKEA wants to help new parents find a name

The stunt comes after Norway and other Nordic countries are experiencing a baby boom.

“In the aftermath of the pandemic, we have seen both a shortage of raw materials and challenges with delivery times, but in Norway there is at least no shortage of children. Now IKEA wants to help new parents find a name for their child,” Ikea Norway said in a statement.

If you’re worried about how your child will feel if they found out they were named after a piece of furniture, that won’t be entirely true. Ikea takes inspiration from the world around them when choosing names.

“IKEA names its products after Swedish towns, lakes, and other geographical features,” Ikea said in a statement, “but also uses names that have traditionally gone to people.”

So what are you waiting for? Head over the the Ikea Norway website for some quality baby name inspiration.
