If you own a dog or a cat, you may be shocked to hear that they probably have dental disease. In fact, recent data indicates that 80 per cent of cats and dogs have dentals disease, even though it’s easily preventable.
The worst part of animal dental disease is that you can’t always immediately see it. Dr Veronica Monaghan, Chief Veterinary Officer at Greencross Vets is urging pet owners to keep an eye out for key indicators of dental disease and review their pet’s dental health regime regularly.
Common signs of dental disease in pets are:
- Bad breath
- Discolouration
- Plaque or tartar build up on teeth
- Your pet keeps pawing at their mouth
- Your pet has difficulty eating or suddenly loses their appetite
- Redness or inflammation of gums
- Bleeding around their mouth
- Swelling under their eyes – which can indicate a dental abscess.
If your pet is showing any of the above signs it might be time for a trip to the vet.
