Blankets have a very important purpose, especially in the middle of the winter.

Nothing beats snuggling up on the lounge at night with a comfy blanket or throw. But what if your favourite blanket doesn’t go with your couch, or it just takes up too much space during the day when not in use?
That’s where this simple folding method comes in.
How to fold a blanket like a pillow
Instead of leaving blankets and throws strewn around, you can fold them neatly like a pillow giving the room a cleaner and more put-together appearance.
Natasha Swingler is the brains behind the TikTok account (@effectivespaces). She showed her followers two easy ways to neatly fold blankets when short on space. And we think they are pretty great. Follow the step-by-step instructionos below or watch the video here or at the top of the page.
Lumbar pillow fold
- For the first method, Natasha demonstrates how to fold your blanket into a lumbar pillow. In the video, she already has her blanket folded in half. Next, she folds the left side of the blanket into the middle and places the right side over the top, creating a long and narrow rectangle.
- The width of this rectangle will determine the length of the resulting pillow, so keep that in mind as you fold.
- Now fold the left short side of the rectangle inward, just once. Then, move to the right short side and roll that end towards the folded edge.
- Approach the left side with the rolled portion, and tuck the “roll” you created inside the top layer of the short fold. This will help secure the folded blanket in place.
- Now place your new/old cushion on the bed or couch, and you are done.
Knot cushion fold
- The first step is to fold your blanket in half. Next, focusing on the longer length of the folded blanket, roll this longer length until you have a long and thin roll.
- Once you have the roll, tie a basic knot with the blanket.
- To complete the process, tuck the loose ends, also known as the tails, into the centre of the knot. This will help secure the knot and give the cushion a neat appearance.
- And you’re done. You now have two methods for folding a blanket like a pillow.
- Of course, the success of these folds will depend on the size and weight of your blankets. But with the right blanket, we think this is a genius idea for efficient stacking and storage when you don’t have much space.
