“We spend a lot of time hanging with our chooks in their coop so [we] wanted something that looked nice but was also functional and easy for the kids to access for eggs and cleaning,” Ms Hawken explained to Better Homes and Gardens.

“We have a range of different chickens that all have different needs so it only made sense to customise something to suit them all!”

Ms Hawken was inspired to make the nesting box after using Kmart’s timber storage bench for another DIY project.

“I had recently used one of Kmart’s timber outdoor storage boxes to make a mud kitchen for my three year old and once I realised how easy it is to change the boxes a little, I started planning my nesting boxes,” she said.

Ms Hawken used two timber storage benches and three plastic storage containers from Kmart to make the nesting boxes.

“The whole project was just under $120 including the easily removable baskets for ease of cleaning!”

The creative DIY project received 1,600 ‘likes’ on the Facebook page, Kmart Mums Australia, and Ms Hawken was praised for her ingenuity.

“This is the best looking chook pen!” one woman posted.

“So glam… pampered chooks,” another commenter added.

According to Ms Hawken, the new addition to the backyard was an all-round success.

“The kids enjoyed helping build it and the chickens are even more happy with their comfy nests”.
