Have you made a New Year’s resolution to declutter and get your wardrobe organised? Here’s help from an expert and it only takes 5 minutes.
Watch: How To Makeover An Old Wardrobe
Wanting a clean slate or a fresh start is at the top of everyone’s new year resolutions, which means lots of stress cleaning! And not only do our minds suffer from the decluttering, but so do our wardrobes and style.
This year, your summer cleaning doesn’t have to be a mess of stress, sweat and donation piles.
Instead, why not try the ‘reverse hanger hack’?
When changing up your style to reflect 2024 trends, it can be challenging to work out what to keep and what to get rid of. With thanks to professional organiser Anita Birges from Mise en Place, this cleaning hack takes care of business without a day stuck in your closet.
Better yet, it will help you define your style and keep everything neat and tidy for the whole year!
How to do the reverse hanger hack:
1. Remove all of your hanging clothes from the rail and place the hanger in reverse, so they hang in the opposite direction. This means that the open end of the hanger hook should be facing out towards you.
2. Set a timer to remind yourself in 6 months to check your hangers. If you have an alternating wardrobe of seasonal clothing, this can be done in three months time instead.
3. Each day, as you choose your outfit and wear it, you will replace them on the rail with the open hook end facing inwards or the ‘normal way’.
4. Wear your clothes and replace them normally in this way for the next 6 months
5. After 6 months, it’s time to check your wardrobe. All of the hangers that have not been turned around or placed back normally have clothes on them that are unworn. If you have not reached for specific items of clothing, it’s time to get rid of them! Donate, sell or swap the items with your friends.

How to declutter your folded clothes
Once your hanging clothes are sorted out, it’s time to turn to the drawers. While your underwear and socks will show definite signs or wear and tear, athletic wear, simple t-shirts and even pyjamas can be difficult to downsize. The best way to declutter this part of your wardrobe is by using a maybe box. This hack is quite similar to the reverse hanger hack, except you’ve got a box instead of a coathanger and rail.
Here’s how it works:
1. Go through each drawer where you feel there is a surplus of clothing. This step does require more judgement and perhaps a little try on session. Work out the clothes that you consider to be a ‘maybe’, you like how they look but you’re not sure if you wear them that often.
2. Place your ‘maybe’ pieces of clothing into your box. You can have you box next to your set of drawers or even just have a ‘maybe’ section inside your tallboy.
3. Set a timer to remind yourself in 3 months time to check your maybe box.
4. The items of clothing that you did not remove from your maybe box and wear throughout the three month period should be removed from your wardrobe.
