Just when you think you’re on top of it, you turn around, and it’s a mess again. This is especially true if you have lots of clutter.

If things look grim, it’s common to feel like you don’t know where to start. That’s where these tidying methods come in.

Each offers a practical approach to cleaning and organising your home, hopefully making you feel less stressed.

Three tidying methods to make cleaning your house easier

1. The washing basket tidying method

The washing basket method is quick and easy and is one of our favourites. When your floor is completely covered in toys and things, grab a washing basket and zip around the room, picking up everything and putting it in the basket.

Not only does picking up all items simultaneously save you time, it instantly reduces clutter!

Then move from room to room, putting items back where they belong. While putting the basket out of sight and emptying it later is tempting, we don’t recommend it. Get it over and done with; otherwise, it’s just another thing on your to-do list.

2. The flat surfaces method

The flat surface method helps break cleaning a messy room down into more manageable tasks.

Instead of looking at the room as a whole, section it off into surfaces. For example, clean all the stuff from the lounge first. Next, move to the bench and then the floor. You get the picture. Don’t move to a new surface until the one you’re working on is finished.

3. The cleaning clockwise tidying method

The cleaning clockwise tidying method is self-explanatory and involves starting at one end of a room and working your way around in a clockwise direction.

That said, there are two ways you can do this.

Either completely clean parts of a room in a clockwise direction. Or you can work your way around the room in layers. On the first round, remove anything that doesn’t belong in the room. On your second time around, you can dust and clean all the surfaces; on the third round, you could do the floors.

These three tidying methods – washing baskets, flat surfaces, and cleaning clockwise – can be effective tools to help clean and organise your homes. Breaking down the process into smaller, more manageable tasks will help you manage clutter more efficiently. But ultimately, the key is to find a method that works for you.

Go forth and tidy!
