Luckily, Choice has just released its 2025 laundry detergent test, putting more than 50 powders, liquids, capsules, and sheets through their paces.

Best liquid detergent for a front-load washing machine

While Omo took the top spot for best laundry detergent in a front loader washing machine, it was a powder. If you prefer a liquid detergent, we’ve got some excellent news for you.

According to Choice’s 2025 testing, the best-value laundry liquid for a front-loader in Australia is Aldi Trimat Advanced Laundry Liquid Concentrate, which scored 73% and costs just 26 cents per wash (compared to Omo’s 83 cents.) It outperformed most liquid competitors, including Radiant Advanced+ Cleans & Softens 5-in-1 Laundry Liquid and Aldi Green Action Laundry Liquid Concentrate, offering exceptional value without compromising cleaning power.

“The performance of the Aldi powder shows you can get a great wash for a fraction of the cost of the leading brands,” says Choice head of reviews and testing Matthew Steen.

Best budget detergent for front-loader washing machine

The good news? You don’t need to spend a fortune on clean clothes. Choice found several high-value options under 30¢ per wash that still scored above the recommended 70% mark:

  • Active Expert Laundry Powder – 74% (16 cents per wash)
  • Aldi Trimat Advanced Laundry Liquid Concentrate – 73% (26 cents per wash)
  • Coles Ultra Concentrate Laundry Powder – 71% (24 cents per wash)

These products demonstrate that you can still achieve an excellent wash without premium prices. Specifically, Aldi’s laundry liquid is one of the best liquid detergents for front-load washing machines, especially if you’re on a budget.

Is it better to use pods or liquid detergent in a front-loading washing machine?

Interestingly, some pods outperformed many liquid detergents in a front-load washing machine. Pods are convenient and deliver a consistent dose every time, but liquid detergent is usually more cost-effective and gives you more control over how much you use.

Can I use any liquid detergent for a front-load washing machine?

Always choose a detergent labelled “front loader” or “HE”, as these formulas are low-sudsing, more concentrated, and designed to work effectively with the machine’s lower water levels and tumbling action. It’ll protect your washing machine, keep clothes cleaner, and avoid long-term build-up or damage.

Why your washing machine still matters

Even the best liquid detergent for a front-load washing machine can’t make up for a washer that isn’t doing its job. Choice’s experts say much of the cleaning power comes from the mechanical action of the machine itself, so investing in a good washer is just as important as choosing the right detergent.
