Time Out is a global media company that has been around since 1968. The outlet covers the latest food, events, entertainment and culture in cities across the world, making it one of the first stops for travellers researching new destinations. Thanks to this, Time Out is in the unique position of having access to culture-vultures in almost every major city across the world, which means they know their stuff.
Time Out partnered with Tapestry Research to conduct the Time Out Index Survey on almost 34,000 people across the world on what they like about their city. The survey covered everything from food, entertainment and culture to safety, sociability and affordability. The results are surprising.
The survey was able to identify the top 48 cities in the world for 2019, and two Australian cities made the cut: Melbourne and Sydney.
Melbourne came in at second place – making it the second-best city to live and play in the world. Sydney also made the cut, but at a disappointing 39th place – out of 48. It seems lockout laws and the governments war on live music is starting to take a toll on locals.
The survey found that Sydneysiders rated Sydney as the worst for nightlife, but 71 per cent of Sydneysiders workout each week, making the harbour city one of the fittest.
Melbourne was rated one of the happiest cities, with locals giving a thumbs up to their food, drink, entertainment and night life. In fact, according to Time Out, Melbourne has more live music venues per resident than any other city on earth.
