The Australian Taxation Office has recently reported that the department is struggling to deal with a huge influx of phone calls from people who are confused about the $1080 tax rebate, and people who have lodged their tax returns early in order to take advantage of the new tax cuts. However, at times of confusion, scammers love to try and make a buck. Unfortunately, that is what is happening this year.
Since June, people have reported to the ATO that they are being contacted via the messaging app WhatsApp by individuals impersonating the ATO. In these messages the scammers claim to have a refund available for the recipient, if they supply personal banking and identity information. Of course, this is a ploy to collect private data and steal sensitive information and/or funds.
The ATO has issues a statement saying it does not have a WhatsApp profile, nor would it ever use the platform to contact anyone. The ATO also reminds people that it does not have an ‘online tax refund form’, and will never send an email or SMS asking individuals to access their online services via a hyperlink.
If you have been a victim of this scam, or been contacted by people claiming to represent the ATO, authorities urge Australians to report the scam online via the ATO scam form and contact 1800 008 540.
