How to declutter your kitchen

Cooler days are ideal for getting organised indoors, starting with the hardest working room in the house – your kitchen!

Decluttering is one of those jobs that’s commonly put off for another day, but deep down we all know it’s one of the most satisfying feelings when you finally get your home absolutely organised! Get started in the kitchen with these handy hints, then once you’ve caught the clutter-busting bug, you’ll be ready to conquer the whole house.

1. Tidy up your cupboards

Start by opening up each cupboard and emptying them out. Clear out anything you no longer use – if it’s in good nick, pass it on to a friend or family member, or consider dropping it off at your local donation store. Wipe out your cupboards, then place the items you rarely use at the back, and regularly-used items at the front. Stack your plastic container collection by size – the same goes for your pots and pans – and neatly coil cords of your appliances.

2. Stow efficiently

If you don’t already have one, buy an inexpensive cutlery tray to slot in your drawer and keep everything neatly divided. For less-used items that you can’t part with, place them in large plastic tubs so you can stack them up the back of cupboards, taking full advantage of the height of each cupboard. In your pantry, you can source large heavy-duty plastic tubs on wheels to hold your dry ingredients, then tuck them under the lowest shelf. The wheels make them easy to slide in and out when you need them.

3. Clear off the counters

If items made their way to your benchtop because there was simply no room left in your cupboards, now’s the time to stow them away again. Clear herbs and spices off your counter – just label them and stow them neatly in a drawer or wall-mounted caddy. This goes for appliances that aren’t frequently used, too! If you’re starting to gather a pile of stuff on your benchtop that you need to go through – think documents and bills – thin it out and file it!

4. Hit the fridge

Is your fridge covered in clutter? Take a minute to rummage through it! File old bills, chuck out anything you no longer need, and consider shifting an excess of kids’ artwork to a scrapbook. While you’re there, give the inside of your fridge a bit of a once-over, too. Discard expired goods, wipe over surfaces and make things neat and tidy.

5. Place it out of sight

You can declutter other zones in your kitchen by seeking out clever hooks and other handy mechanisms from your local hardware store. For example, consider installing brackets to hold your rubbish bin and recycling bin on the inside of a cupboard door or drawer (freeing up floor space) and self-adhesive hooks or rails to hideaway your tea towels. Easy!
