How to tell if you have a magnesium deficiency

Magnesium is an essential macro-mineral for a healthy human body. It regulates muscle and nerve function, it controls blood sugar levels and blood pressure, and even assists in making protein, bone and DNA, and magnesium is used in almost every cell of the body. Needless to say, this nutrient is important. Unfortunately, research suggests that 80% of adults aren’t eating enough magnesium, resulting in deficiencies. 

How can you give your magnesium level a boost?

You can find magnesium in foods such as legumes, nuts, seeds, whole grains, leafy green vegetables, milk and yoghurt. Ensure these foods are incorporated into a healthy and balanced diet.

What are the signs of magnesium deficiency?

According to the Australian Health Direct guidelines, magnesium deficiency can present the following symptoms. However, symptoms of magnesium deficiency often won’t become prevalent until your magnesium levels become severely low.

  • Loss of appetite
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Fatigue and weakness
  • Shaking
  • ‘Pins and needles’ feelings in limbs
  • Muscle spasms
  • Sleepiness
