How to make your own plant fertiliser at home

Whether you have a few indoor plants or a garden full of lush foliage, bushes and flowers, at some point your precious plants are going to need some fertiliser. But, did you know that you can make a powerful fertiliser at home just by collecting your kitchen scraps?

There’s no need to head to the nursery and buy an expensive fertilising product, just follow the steps below.

  1. Collect any leftover coffee grounds, egg shells and banana peels from your kitchen.
  2. Cut the banana peels in chunky squares.
  3. Wash and dry out egg shells, then break them into smaller pieces.
  4. Pop all three ingredients into a food blender or processor and blend until the mixture is soil-like.
  5. Spread over the soil in your pot plants or garden.

Why it works:

According to How Stuff Works, banana peels are filled with potassium which helps plants produce flowers and fruit. Coffee grounds contain nitrogen, calcium, copper and potassium, caffeine by-products that benefit plants, and egg shells are high in calcium.
