DIY: Mini Succulent Garden

Make a charming centrepiece for your outdoor table

What you’ll need

  • 28cm terracotta pot saucer
  • Cacti & succulent potting mix
  • Miniature garden arbour, furniture and wheelbarrow.
  • Fine decorative pebbles
  • Small-leaved succulents such as Crassula varieties.

Step 1 – Add potting mix and arbour

Fill saucer with potting mix to about 1 cm below the rim. Place the miniature garden arbour in the soil about 2 cm inside the rim of the saucer.

Step 2 – Create the pathway

Spread a layer of fine pebbles curving from one side of the saucer through the arbour to the other.

Step 3 – Add succulents

Pinch the tips, or rosettes, off your chosen succulents. Insert them into the soil on either side of your pathway. Mix and match plant types and colours. Try clusters of similar plants with others of contrasting foliage shapes and colours as highlights.

Step 4 – Decorate your garden

To give your centrepiece more dimension, add features like a mini wheelbarrow and chair, complete with sleeping cat figurine. Fill the wheelbarrow with more cuttings. Try a tip of Crassula tetragona to imitate the look of a small tree.
