If ladders, tools and bikes are competing for space in your garage, take inspiration from one woman’s remarkable transformation.
Adelaide blogger Iryna Federico says that while her garage was never “messy”, it also “wasn’t as efficient as it could have been”.
“We wanted to get everything off the floor,” she explained to Better Homes and Gardens, adding that her and her husband are visual people, so they “preferred to have things out in the open”.
Making the most of the empty wall space, Iryna mounted larger items to the wall.
“I then organised all the smaller items into like-minded categories and stored them in white 40 litre Ikea rubbish bins,” she said.
Iryna had previously used 50 litre plastic tubs to store all of the smaller items.
But, she explained, “they were quite heavy and bulky to access on a regular basis, so switching to 40 litre bins not only doubled the amount of storage per shelf, it also allowed me to use the depth of the shelving behind the bins as well.”
Iryna also mounted the tools on the wall.
“Our tools used to just sit in a basket that we’d carry around when working on projects so you always had to rummage through to find what you needed,” she said.
The garage features a mudroom area for storing shoes, bags and coats, with shelves from Willow and Wood.
Iryna used the flexi storage system from Bunnings to custom plan the tool wall to suit their needs.
“Custom designing the storage solution seemed like the best idea for us because the pre-made stuff was either too big, too small or too bulky,” she said.
The extraordinary storage system came at a cost.
“I severely underestimated how much garage stuff costs. I budgeted $1,000 for the whole thing, thinking that was a huge overestimate and I ended up spending $1,400.”
However, Iryna admits that the makeover was worth it in the end.
“My husband loves that everything is within easy access and clearly labelled,” she said.
