The golden arches are an immediately recognisable symbol, no matter what country you’re in. From Australia to America, McDonald’s is one of the most popular fast food chains the world has ever seen. However, a gross story has recently surfaced on the internet, and it proves that food from McDonald’s lasts forever. But it raises the question – what’s in it, and what are we eating?
In 2009 McDonald’s closed the only three restaurants it had in Iceland, but an enterprising gentleman decided to buy one last burger and fries, and preserve them in a glass case – for 10 years.
Hjörtur Smárason originally kept the burger and fries in a plastic bag for three years, but the food is now in a class case and on display at the hostel Snotra House in Þykkvibær, South Iceland, after doing a short stint on Display at The Bus Hotel in Reykjavik.
Although it’s been 10 years since the meal was purchased, it’s still in good condition and the burger doesn’t even show any signs of decomposition. Keen to see it for yourself? You can view the live stream of the burger HERE.
Siggi Sigurdur, the owner of Snotra House, where the burger and fries are currently on display, told BBC News that the burger still looks quite good, and that the live stream website received 400,000 hits per day.
“It’s a fun thing, of course, but it makes you think about what you are eating. There is no mould, it’s only the paper wrapping that looks old.”
It makes you think about what you are eating, indeed!
