A household can never have too many baskets for storage, decorative planters or décor.
Instead of purchasing new baskets to update your interior look, it is possible to give your old woven baskets a makeover and turn them into reimagined designer creations in just a few easy steps.
In this week’s Better Home Hacks, Better Homes & Garden’s Dora Papas shares her tips for upcycling an existing foldable woven basket using matt chalk paint and a pom-pom trim.
To start, Dora advises to follow the fold line and stick blue painter’s tape around the basket.
Then, flip the basket upside down and use a brush or a sponge brush to apply a light coat of chalk paint.
“The idea is to get even coverage,” she says.
“Brush up from the painter’s tape rather than down towards it – this will prevent the paint seeping under the tape. After all, you want a crisp paint line, not one that is feathered and irregular.”
Once the paint has dried, Papas says you may notice a little show through of the seagrass due to the weave.
She advises to add a second coat of paint to fix the problem and leave the basket to dry thoroughly.
Next, Papas says to use tacky glue to attach the pom-pom trim – or fringing – around the top edge of the basket and hold the trim in place with clips until the glue sets.
“Now the glue has set, remove the clips and you’re done,” she says.
