When disaster strikes (AKA, you find mould growing in your home), there’s only one thing to do: hop online for a mould removal system.
Having lived in the Sunshine State for a majority of my life, summers and “winters” (said lightly) have typically been dry — give or take a couple of tropical cyclones. It’s safe to say that I was well and truly unaware of the headache that wet weather brings – and along with that, mould growth – when I moved to Sydney.
So, after assessing the growing mould situation, performing a professional-grade clean (done by myself) and a PhD in removing mould (thank you, Google), I became an unsolicited expert. With this newfound skill under my belt, it is only fair that I share my key findings with you.
If you have found yourself in the late-night scramble searching for mould-controlling solutions, you’ve come to the right place. Read on to find the top two products that saved my sanity.
What’s so special about these cleaning systems?
Yes, that’s right, cleaning systems — plural! Of course, you could set yourself up with a two-in-one go-getting machine, but in my opinion, tackling the pesky mould spores with an air purifier and dehumidifier proved a more thorough approach. Let’s discuss…
1. Philips 2000i series air purifier

The Philips air purifier was an obvious choice for me as it has been designed to target airborne bacteria with advanced scanning technology, detecting and fighting pollution in real time with 60,000 continual scans per minute. Other key features that stood out were:
- Superior filtration performance removes 99.97 per cent of bacteria, pollen, dust and pet dander
- Philips Air+ app allows smart control from anywhere at any time
- Purifies a 20-metre squared room in less than nine minutes
- Features four modes: AI smart adapt, sleep, gentle and turbo
- NanoProtect HEPA filter with smart change indicator
- Low energy consumption running at a maximum of 46W power
- Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars on Amazon
How to use the Phillips 2000i air purifier:
- Step 1: Remove the plastic cover from the filter
- Step 2: Position the purifier as you like and plug it into an outlet
- Step 3: Press the power on button
- Step 4: Decide on which operating function suits your needs
- Step 5: Step away, and monitor the air quality from your device
2. Hysure Quiet and Portable dehumidifier

Claiming to produce noise disturbance less than that of a raindrop, the Hysure mini dehumidifier stood out to me as it accommodated to 24/7 operation, unlike other systems. Additional features include:
- Low energy consumption
- Operates at 35dB
- Capable of removing up to 600mL per day
- Automatic shutdown which ensures safety
- Touch switch control for operational ease
- Rated 4 out of 5 stars on Amazon
How to use the Hysure dehumidifier:
- Step 1: Remove the power cord and adapter from the water collection dish
- Step 2: Position the diffuser near an outlet away from windows and doors
- Step 3: Turn the diffuser on
- Step 4: Empty the dish when the light turns red
- Step 5: Reposition the dish in the diffuser and turn on

Results from our test (so far)
The combined system approach has proved to be seemingly efficient. In terms of air purification, I have noticed a significant improvement. When I first turned the system on, the digital interface appeared purple-red, inferring poor air quality. Since then – and no more than 24 hours later – we have officially made it to the blue light, suggesting good quality air levels. To maintain the blue light tick of approval, I have found it important to make sure all doors and windows remain closed. Though this may seem counterintuitive, protecting the room from excess airflow allows the purifying system to target the nasties that are active in the space.
Additionally, I have observed very visible results with the Hysure quiet and portable dehumidifier. Within six hours of running the machine, I had already collected approximately 100mL of water — quite incredible considering the small size of the room. Not only was I able to see the evidence of the machine’s efficiency, but the atmosphere in the room felt considerably drier and less muggy.
Overall, are these products worth it?
