Celebrating Champagne: A Wine for All Seasons

$80 $60, Amazon

Best for: champagne enthusiasts & those with fancy palettes

If a bottle of champagne doesn’t quite feel personal enough (or if your giftee’s favourite bottles are just a tad too expensive), Sally Hillman’s book ‘Celebrating Champagne’ is an ideal alternative. Part recipe book, part wine guides and part historical deep-dive, it offers readers the chance to better understand what makes champagne special and cook up some lovely meals to pair with a glass or two.

I also had the chance to speak to Sally about her drink of choice and how to make the most of a bottle of bubbles this holiday season; you can find her expert advice at the bottom of the article. And, to give you a better idea of what to expect from her book, I asked her to describe it in three words. Her answer? “Approachable, informative and inspiring,” and after reading it myself, I can’t help but agree.

Expert advice with Champagne Expert, Sally Hillman

If you’re anything like me, trying to find a nice bottle of wine to gift can prove a little stress-inducing. That is to say, I’m by no means an expert. However, if you’re leaning towards a fancy alcohol gift, I’ve found just the expert to guide us.

Sally Hillman, author of ‘Celebrating Champagne: A Wine for All Seasons,’ has all the answers to help you make the right choice. Peruse her expert insights into choosing the right bottle,

For those of us who aren’t experts, how do we choose a nice bottle of champagne?

If someone wants to explore Champagne more deeply (without stretching their budget), I always suggest trying grower-producer champagnes. These wines are made by the same people who grow the grapes on their own small estates, offering extraordinary character and remarkable value compared to the better-known Grandes Marques (the big brands).

At a wine shop or bar, don’t hesitate to ask if they stock grower-producer champagnes; it’s the best way to discover the soul of this extraordinary region. Start with a non-vintage blend and let your curiosity lead the way.

What would be your go-to champagne to bring along to festive events?

For festive occasions, I love to start with a Blanc de Blancs, something bright, elegant and precise to set the tone. One of my favourites is Champagne Pierre Péters ‘Cuvée de Réserve’ Brut NV. This Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs is enriched by a perpetual solera dating back to 1988 and is pristine, mineral and beautifully expressive. It’s a showstopping pour that always feels like a celebration in a bottle.

From there, I often reach for a classic blend of the three principal champagne grapes: Pinot noir, Meunier and Chardonnay. A standout for me is Champagne Bérêche et Fils Brut Réserve NV. It’s a beautifully composed wine that strikes a perfect balance between freshness, fruit and depth.

And when you’re pouring for a larger group, a magnum (1.5L) is the perfect choice. Not only does it look impressive, but it also tastes better. The larger format preserves freshness and enhances complexity. Festive by nature and generous in every sense, a magnum truly sets the mood.

What kind of gift recipient would Celebrating Champagne: A Wine For All Seasons be best for?

It is ideally suited to champagne enthusiasts and aspiring connoisseurs alike, as well as lovers of French culture who appreciate the nuances of tradition and the joy of celebration. Bridging the worlds of lifestyle, culinary inspiration and wine education, this book offers something truly special: a thoughtful and elegantly curated guide that elevates both everyday moments and special occasions

Whether for the passionate home cook, the design-savvy host or the curious wine lover, this book is a refined addition to any kitchen library, an elegant coffee table showpiece and a welcome gift for those who cherish elegance, conviviality and the enduring allure of champagne.
