As anyone with a dishwasher will know, it’s common for these containers to flip during a wash cycle and fill with dirty dishwater.
One clever person shared on Reddit a very simple solution to stop this from happening.
“I use an upside-down metal dish rack to keep my Tupperware from flipping upside down in the dishwasher,” they wrote alongside an image of the hack.

Lots of people loved this simple idea.
“Where were you last night when I washed all my food storage thingies, and now they’re all full of water,” wrote one person.
Another added, “This is the first time I’ve seen a life hack that I’m eager to try.”
Someone else pointed out that this hack is a great way to kill two birds with one stone.
“It also has the bonus of washing the dish rack!” they said.
Alternatively, if you don’t want to put an entire dishrack in your dishwasher, another commenter said you can buy products to stretch over your plastic items and keep them in place.
“They specifically advertise them for keeping plastic baby bottles in place,” the person wrote. “Amazon could hook you up. it’s called the Boon span dishwasher net.”
Is it bad to clean plastic containers in the dishwasher?
It depends on the specific plastic container and the dishwasher you are using. Some plastic containers are labelled dishwasher-safe and can withstand hot water and the dynamic cleaning action of a dishwasher without any issues.
To determine whether a plastic container is dishwasher-safe, you should check the label or packaging for instructions from the manufacturer. They usually provide guidelines on how to clean the container safely, including whether it is dishwasher-safe or should be washed by hand.
