Building homes on the moon could happen by 2040

NASA is investigating real estate options that reach for the stars.

Considering the astronomical cost of living these days, it makes sense that you may want to consider buying a property among the stars.

Well, it might not be as far-fetched as it sounds. NASA, the space agency that brought us to the moon in the 1960s, has set its sights on creating lunar real estate by 2040.

The idea of lunar living might sound like science fiction, but it’s due to become a reality in the next 20 years.

NASA’s Artemis program is leading the charge to get humans situated on the moon. In fact, they’re not just thinking about one small step for man; they’re thinking about building a sustainable, long-term presence on our celestial neighbour.

So, how does one go about building a house on the moon?

It’s not as simple as calling up a local construction crew. The moon has unique challenges, from extreme temperatures to the lack of a breathable atmosphere. NASA engineers are thinking outside the … planet to overcome these hurdles.

One approach is 3D printing. NASA plans to use lunar materials to construct buildings using 3D printing technology. This means they’ll turn moon dust into building blocks for a truly cosmic creation.

Another idea is to create habitats underground. The moon’s surface is exposed to harsh radiation and temperature swings, but a subterranean home would protect it from the elements. In this case, think of it as the ultimate (hu)man cave or moon cave.

The benefits of lunar housing extend beyond just cool architecture. It could be a stepping stone for future missions to Mars and beyond. By perfecting the art of living on the moon, we’re paving the way for more ambitious space exploration.

So, while we won’t be packing our bags for the moon just yet, it’s thrilling to think that by 2040, we might have lunar neighbours. NASA’s vision of moon houses is more than just a sci-fi fantasy; it’s a bold step towards our future in the stars.
