A Brisbane teacher has joined a growing movement of Australian mums giving their pantries the ultimate makeover.
Mother of two Kathie Ginman says she was inspired to organize her pantry after reading Marie Kondo’s popular book, The life changing magic of tidying up.
“It started with my bedroom and asking myself, ‘Does it bring you joy?’” “If not, it’s out!” Ms Ginman told Better Homes and Gardens.
“It’s a bit of a running joke in our household now but it really works.”
She was also inspired by Michael Mosley’s “amazing insight into stomach health” which prompted her to change the family’s diet.
However, she soon discovered that she had “packets and packets of seeds and delicious powders”, as well as several years’ worth of canned food.
After cleaning out her pantry and culling unwanted items, Ms Ginman measured her cupboards and took stock of what she had.
“I counted everything that needed a container or jar and went to Kmart. I was going to go all-white but Kmart’s collection is mainly black and chrome, so I went with that.”
Amongst the purchases from Kmart, Ms Ginman bought the 17-piece spice jar set; food storage containers; and jam jars. She estimates that she spent a total of $120 on new storage and labels.
“I couldn’t believe the quality and how little it cost. I already had a few plastic clear boxes from Kmart and the Ikea boxes at the bottom. I really wanted to add my few vintage kitchen items as well, which fitted well with the black theme,” she said.
Her family thought she was “weird” at first, but they appreciated her efforts.
“My two daughters absolutely love the pantry and have sent it to all their friends,” she said.
The pantry caused a stir on the Kmart Mums Facebook page, resulting in over 1,500 ‘likes’ and 120 overwhelmingly positive comments.
“This is absolutely magical. I’m in love,” one woman posted.
“Is there such thing as #pantryenvy??” another commenter added.
Since giving her pantry the makeover, Kathie has admitted that she’s found “joy”.
“I hear angel music when I open the doors!’ she said.
