Here are 6 kitchen items you’re storing wrong.

1. Knives

While it makes sense to keep knives out of sight and reach of little hands, storing them in a drawer causes them to become blunt. Knife blades rubbing against another surface, can speeded up the time it takes for them go blunt, reducing their effectiveness. Instead, store your knives in countertop knife blocks or magnetic strips.

2. Spices

If you’re decanting your spices into a fancy jar, think again. Not only is it time-consuming, but you’re likely wasting precious spices. Keep spices in the jars they come in and organise them in a spice rack to suit your cooking needs.

3. Wine glasses

Sure, it makes sense to store wine glasses rim-side-down to stop dust from piling up, but you’re more likely to break them. The rim is the most fragile part of a wine glass and should be stored right-side-up to prevent it from breaking. Go ahead and flip your glasses back around!

4. Cast iron cookware

If you’re a fan of cooking with cast iron cookware, you need to know a little storage tip to make them last longer: paper towel. Stacking cast iron on top of cast iron can damage your pans. A simple solution is to place a paper towel between each pan to prevent scratches and damage.

5. Chopping boards

Chopping boards can be an awkward kitchen item to store, especially if you are short on space. While stacking them on top of each other might be easier, it’s not recommended, especially if they are still damp. Doing so can cause them to bend out of shape or, worse, develop mould. Store them vertically, and make sure you dry them properly.

6. Plastic containers

Storing plastic containers with their lids on might make it easier to find a matching set when you need one. But leaving the lids on can actually cause your containers to smell, and it also takes up a lot of extra space in your drawers. Instead, keep lids together and stack containers inside each other.
