As anyone with a cat will know, getting cat pee out of the carpet is no easy task.
How to get cat pee out of the carpet
While cleaning up the cat pee as quickly as possible is key (the longer you leave it, the more it will smell), it’s also essential to work out why your cat might be peeing outside its litter box.
Why do cats pee out of the litter box?
There are many reasons why your cat might be peeing outside of its litter box, including medical and behavioural causes.
Problems with the urinary tract, liver or kidneys can cause a cat to change their urinating habits. They may not be able to make it to the litter box. Or they are peeing more frequently, and the litter needs to be changed more. If your cat starts peeing around the house, it’s a good idea to rule out any medical issues.
Behavioural causes are common and can signal your cat is stressed or anxious. You may have moved house, or a new person is living with you, and these can all cause a cat to pee outside the box.
Cats can also start peeing around the house simply because they don’t like their litter box. Try a different litter box, add an extra litter, or move it to another part of the house to see if that helps.
Products that clean cat pee out of the carpet
Taking to the Facebook group, Mums Who Clean, one mum pleaded for “urgent help” on how to get cat pee out of the carpet.
While many products were recommended, there was a clear winner with many positive reviews: Biozet Laundry Liquid Eliminator.
“Biozet laundry liquid eliminator. Mix some with water and scrub over the area, getting it quite wet. Soak up with an old towel. And put a fan on it to dry it quickly. Recommended by our vet,” said one mum.
Another added: “Biozet liquid all the way! Cheaper than horrible expensive urine-off stuff. It breaks down the crystals and works on cats who spray too. ( it was a lifesaver when my male cat sprayed up and down our hallway, ewwww).”
If you can’t find Biozet, here are some more products mums recommend to help remove that awful cat pee smell.
- Britex – “Britex urine spray from Bunnings. Absolutely brilliant.”
- Aldi Di-San Stain Remover – “It sounds absolutely stupid, but the Aldi stain remover with enzymes was the only thing that helped with my couch. I sprayed it on, let it absorb for 5 mins, then got the Bissel spot cleaned out and went over the areas, and once it was dry, no more smell.”
- PetLab – “Petlab. You can buy it online.”
How to get cat pee smell out of carpets
Here’s what you should do to help clean and eliminate the smell of cat pee from your carpet.
- If still wet, soak up as much cat pee as you can with an absorbent cloth or paper towel. If it’s almost dry, you can douse it with cold water. Do not use hot water.
- Once you’ve removed as much of the pee as possible, sprinkle your enzyme powder over the carpet to soak up the rest of the liquid.
- Once dry, vacuum up the powder.
- Alternatively, you can spray the area with an enzyme spray to break down the cat pee.
- If you have a pet or carpet vacuum, run it over the affected area.
