Just because you can’t see it, doesn’t mean that you don’t have an infestation. Dampness, a musty smell and condensation are all early signs that could indicate there is an issue.

Big black spots are a clear indicator that mould is present in your house. But often, mould goes undetected, hidden in nooks and crannies, but even worse, in filters, behind mirrors and underneath mattresses and rugs.

The top eight hiding spots to keep an eye out for:

  • Any room with a water source in it — bathrooms, toilets and laundries.
  • It’s also important to look in bedrooms that adjoin bathrooms.
  • Pay extra attention to the corners, ceiling cornices, window sills, carpets and skirting boards.
  • Check soft, porous surfaces like couches and mattresses.
  • Lift up cushions on your sofa, check underneath mattresses, pull back mattress covers, lift rugs and look under your doormat.
  • Additionally, check spots that have no airflow around them — look in cupboards, drawers and behind dressers.
  • The filter of your air conditioner.
  • Some people have even found mould behind picture frames and mirrors hung on the wall.
