It’s easy to reach for a tissue or the hem of your top to clean your glasses, but it’s probably damaging the lenses.
“Often people use a tissue or their sleeve to clean their glasses but this is certainly not a good solution as both can leave dust or dirt on the lens,” Farah Gatrad, Clinical and Regulatory Officer at the Association of Optometrists, told Good Housekeeping.
“It can also cause fine scratches to occur on the lens surface which can impair the lenses over time,” he said.
The only thing you should be using to clean your glasses is a soft microfibre lens cloth, or an alcohol-free liquid lens cleaner.
“Gently rub both sides of the lenses and all parts of the frame for a few seconds,” said Dr Best.
“Make sure you clean every part, including the nose pads and the ends of the temples that rest behind your ears where debris can accumulate.”
You should never clean your glasses with hot water, as it can damage the coating on the lens.
