Does your iron glide smoothly over your clothes, or has it become sticky and hard to use?
If it’s the latter, it’s most likely caused by a build-up of burnt residue.
How to clean an iron plate?
The burnt residue is common and is caused by many things: burnt spray starch, melted synthetic fibre or rusty water.
Regardless of how it got there, if you want your iron to glide effortlessly over your clothes, you’ll need to clean it.
Taking to her Instagram, Laundry Queen Nicole Gibson at Söka Australia shared a simple hack to clean your iron that will only take 5 minutes!
And we’re sure you already have the ingredients around your home.
What you’ll need:
Panadol without enteric coating
Tweezers or metal clothes peg
Cloth – (not microfiber)
How to clean burnt residue off your iron
- Place the panadol in the tweezers and turn your iron on.
- Carefully rub the panadol over the iron plate and watch the residue come off.
- Once finished, wipe the base with a cloth.
- Voila! You are done!
How to clean the inside of your iron
If you want to go one step further, you can also clean the inside of your iron. Here’s how to do it, according to Nicole.
- Add equal parts vinegar and water to your iron.
- Turn on the steam setting.
- Press the steam button to clean the vents and jets.
Tips to avoid ironing altogether
If you’re someone who hates ironing, these tips are for you!
- Before buying clothes, conduct a wrinkle test. Grab some of the fabric, give it a scrunch, and see how wrinkled it gets. If there are lots of creases, then walk away.
- For clothes that need ironing, like business shirts, instead of hanging them on the line with pegs – put them on a coat hanger and leave them to dry. There will be fewer creases.
- Fold your clothes as soon as you take them off the line. Leaving them clumped in the washing basket for days will only worsen the creases.
- If you’re in a pinch, try putting an ice cube in the dryer for 15 minutes with the crinkled shirt. The steam should help to iron out the creases.
