This popular weight loss trick doesn’t actually work

Don’t fall for this.

It seems every health, fitness, wellness and lifestyle influencer is preaching the benefits of drinking a warm glass of water and lemon juice in the morning. It’s a ritual that has become embedded in the morning routines of women across Australia, but does it even work?

Lemon is an excellent source of vitamin C, whether or not you drink it in a glass of water or otherwise. Drinking water and staying hydrated is also good for your health. However, you won’t be getting any other specific health benefits from drinking lemon water beyond those two things. Keep in mind, if you only add one slice of lemon to your water you really won’t be getting all that much vitamin C intake.

However, drinking lemon can actually have a negative impact on your teeth. Lemon is acidic and the downside to acidic foods and drinks is that they can erode tooth enamel. In particular, if you are drinking lemon water first thing in the morning with a dry mouth, your teeth are more susceptible to erosion.

Does drinking a warm glass of lemon water help you lose weight?

The short answer is no, it doesn’t. While drinking it first thing in the morning may improve hydration and your metabolism, drinking a glass of plain water would do the same thing. Alissa Rumsey, a spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics in the UK told Women’s Health that “hot water and lemon in and of itself does not cause any actual weightloss”.

For better results and higher intake of vitamin C include lemon juice and zest in your meals.
